You can access the Internet in one of two ways: via an ISP or an OSP. Both provide Internet access for a monthly fee that ranges from $5 to $20. Some OSPs offer free Internet access. Local ISPs offer Internet access through local telephone numbers to users in a limited geographic region. National ISPs provide access for users nationwide (including mobile users), through local and toll-free telephone numbers and cable. Because of their size, national ISPs offer more services and generally have a larger technical support staff than local ISPs. OSPs furnish Internet access as well as members-only features for users nationwide. Figure 6 lists several national ISPs and OSPs. Before you choose an Internet access provider, compare such features as the number of access hours, monthly fees, available services (e-mail, Web page hosting, chat), and reliability.

Compare Internet Access (Dial up Services)

Dial up connectivity is the easiest and most popular way of Internet connectivity throughout the world for home users. Corporate users having limited requirement have also found this way very cost-effective. Dial up connectivity requires the user to have at least one phone line. With this connectivity, the speed of Internet becomes limited by the capacity of the copper wire. Following are some of the major dial up internet service providers.

Select your state

Choose your ISP carefully (As with all purchases, read the fine print)
  • Since there are several ISP services around, you might ask why you should pay premium for Internet access at all. You get what you pay for, and with a low cost ISP you pay for access by viewing a slew of ads or slow connection speed. If you decide to purchase a internet service, here are a list of Internet service providers who will help you in choosing a service that is right for you.
  • Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide end users with access to the Internet and, in some cases, provide content as well. ISPs typically do not provide the transmission facilities needed to connect to the customer. Instead, these facilities are usually obtained from a third party, such as a local exchange company ("LEC"). This situation is changing in some ways, however. ISPs that own the transmission facilities connecting to the customer are referred to here as facilities based providers. Facilities based providers face some regulatory issues not faced by other ISPs.
  • Presently we are reluctant to recommend any internet service because we have only used a few of them and the features of these services change rapidly. My advice is to use the different services until you find one that meets your individual needs well. If you are using a ISP for the first time go with the big names as the customer support is better with the expensive dialup services.
  • Many people find the one bill convenience of combining their cable and Internet provider convenient. However, people who have finally escaped from their cable company are reluctant to switch back just to get high speed Internet access, particularly when the cable company penalizes them for not being a cable customer.
