From March 1 2002, callers in singapore will have to add
the number '6' in front of all existing 7-digit local fixed-line
Singapore phone and fax numbers. This change comes in response
to the growing consumer market and an increasing demand for telephone lines.
As of March 1 callers will need to dial 6226-6062 instead of the old 226-6062.
The number '6' was chosen because it is currently the least used first digit
in Singapore phone numbers and is therefore likely to cause the least confusion
when new 8-digit phone numbers are introduced.
It is important that all business and residential users identify where any 7-digit
phone numbers have been programmed and make the necessary changes before April 1 at the latest.

Connection Fee
Connection fee or first minute surcharge is charged when a call is connected. The charge
varies between different service providers. This charge is not significant if you are
buying a small value card and intend to use it at once. But, if you buy a high value card,
with high connection fee, then you end up paying this fee everytime you make a new call.
Maintenance Fee
The maintenance fee or sweet fee is charged if the calling card has balance, after making
the first call. This charge varies between different service providers and their products.
This is generally done for keeping the PIN account active after first use. The charging
is done on weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis, after the first use.
Minutes Rounding
Minutes rounding is the basic unit to record the length of the phone call. This varies between
service providers and products. High value cards may have 30 second rounding and low value cards
may have 3 or 6 minute rounding. This is a very important information, you should know, before
using a card and while talking on the phone.
